Power of Planning: Outwork, Outlast, Outshine!

Planning removes guesswork. You wake up knowing what you need to do and what you don't, instead of scrambling to figure it out.

At times, life feels like juggling flaming swords while riding a unicycle, right? Deadlines, projects, and personal goals fly at you like a game of dodgeball on fast-forward. Which one to pick, which one not to? You go to sleep everyday hoping tomorrow is going to be a better day only to go back to the same? But fear not, planning is an incredible skill you didn’t know you had. And it’s not just about organising your life, it’s about crafting a blueprint for success that can turbocharge your goals.

At Skillstr, we’ve launched our “Let’s Kill It!” series #letsskillit to help you bring your best self forward. Today, we focus on planning and ways of working. Whether it’s dominating your workday or crushing your personal goals, we’ve got the hacks you need to conquer life. Let’s dive in!

Smart Work >> Hard Work?

Here’s the deal: hard work is good, but smart work? That’s the game-changer. Planning helps you be the ninja of efficiency, turning massive, daunting goals into bite-sized, doable chunks. Wondering how? Let’s break it down:

  1. Beat overwhelm like a boss: Picture walking into an all-you-can-eat buffet and getting so confused by the options that you just grab a bread roll. Life without planning feels like that: a ton of choices with no direction. But with a plan, you’re the buffet connoisseur, picking the essence of tasks while dodging the soggy salad of distractions. You’ll know exactly what to focus on and when to do it, making overwhelm a thing of the past.
  2. Achieve your goals (not just dream about them): Want that big promotion? Thinking of running a marathon or launching your own business? A plan doesn’t just help, it’s your ultimate BFF. It breaks that giant dream into actionable, manageable steps. Planning gives you the power to turn “someday” into “what right now.” With a roadmap in place, even your wildest ambitions become not only possible but inevitable. Imagine how it was like to get a human on the moon!
  3. Become a master of time: Ever feel like the day just evaporates? Here’s the kicker: everyone gets the same 24 hours, from presidents to YouTubers. The key is planning and using time wisely. When you’ve mapped out your time, you’ll prioritise the important stuff, tackle it head-on, and be able to say, “No biggie, I’ve got this.”

But guess what? Planning isn't set in stone. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes you’ll need to pivot or adjust. Planning gives you the flexibility to roll with life’s punches but while also ensuring that your bigger picture stays constant. Sure, you can have rough couple of hours or couple of days, but you know that you can get back on track!

Planning removes the guesswork. You wake up knowing what you need to do and what you don’t, instead of scrambling to figure it out. It turns “overwhelming” into “manageable.”

Planning isn’t just for CEOs

Planning isn’t reserved for high-powered execs in suits only. Nope, it works across every aspect of your life, from acing exams to organising your dream vacation! We all know that friend who's probably seen every major attraction in all the cities he or she visits!

  • In education: Remember pulling all-nighters before an exam and cramming until your brain felt like mush? (Yes, we’ve all been there.) Good planning would’ve saved you from those last-minute panic sessions and a lot of caffeine. Breaking up study sessions into manageable chunks lets you ace your exams with way less stress and more sleep!
  • In business: Entrepreneurs don’t get to where they are by winging it. They map out detailed business plans, create timelines, and set milestones. Planning helps them dodge chaos and hit those ambitious targets, like a GPS navigating a cross-country road trip.
  • In personal life: Planning isn’t just for work and school. Whether you’re organizing a family trip or trying to carve out some “me time” between meetings and laundry, planning helps you juggle life like a pro. It’s the secret to avoiding burnout and finding time for the fun stuff, like cocktails with friends or finally taking that weekend hike.

Planning removes the guesswork. You wake up knowing what you need to do and what you don’t, instead of scrambling to figure it out. It turns “overwhelming” into “manageable.”

Mastering the Art of Planning & Working

Planning is just one part of the equation though. To truly win at life, you’ve got to master your ways of working along with the bold plans. If your work habits are a mess, planning alone won’t save you, it’ll be like baking the perfect cake only to burn it in the end! Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen:

Eisenhower Matrix or Time Management Matrix

  1. Prioritise like a ninja: If everything’s a priority, nothing’s a priority. Use the Eisenhower or time management matrix to sort your tasks by urgency. Figure out what needs attention ASAP, and let the less urgent stuff chill until later.
  2. Work in sprints: You’re not a robot (unless…you are?). Powering through eight hours straight isn’t humanly possible. Adopt the Agile method: work in short, intense bursts (25 minutes on, 5-minute break) to stay focused without frying your brain. It’s the Pomodoro Technique on steroids!
  3. Build systems, not just lists: Writing to-do lists is cool, but building systems is where the magic happens. Use tools like Slack or Notion to organise your tasks, deadlines, and progress in one place. Visualising your workflow makes your brain happy and frees up space for more creative thinking. It also helps you collaborate effectively with your teams!
  4. Learn to say no: You’re not a superhero, you can’t do it all in the best way. Overloading yourself is a one-way ticket to burnout. Smart planning means knowing when to say “nope, not today” to extra tasks. Seriously, get comfortable with turning things down when it is not a priority.
  5. Reflect Regularly: Planning isn’t “set it and forget it.” The best planners constantly reflect and adjust by scheduling a meeting with themselves. Carve out time each week to ask, “What worked? What didn’t?” Then, tweak your plan for the coming week. Stay as flexible as a yoga instructor!

From the Pros of Planning

Still not convinced planning is the way forward? Let’s look at a few legends who’ve made planning one of their superpowers:

Elon Musk: Planning for Mars

Elon Musk isn’t just a tech genius, he’s actually a master planner. His ambitious goal to colonize Mars? That didn’t happen by throwing a dart at the moon and hoping for the best. Musk starts with massive, audacious goals like that and then plans each tiny step backward, ensuring that even when his rockets blow up (literally), his vision remains intact. Lesson: long-term planning, flexibility, and sheer persistence win the day. As they say, aim for the stars, you’ll at least reach the sky!

Marie Curie: Planning for Breakthroughs

Marie Curie didn’t stumble upon groundbreaking discoveries by luck. Her work on radioactivity took years of planned, meticulous research, and methodical experimentation. Sure, it got her exposed to radioactive materials but the entire humankind is thankful for her exceptional work. Her ability to plan and stick to a scientific process led to two Nobel Prizes, proving that breakthroughs are built on solid, careful steps, not whims.

Jeff Bezos: Planning to Dominate

Jeff Bezos didn’t just set out to sell books, he planned to dominate e-commerce. With his “Day One” mentality, he approached each day with the urgency and agility of a startup. His relentless focus on planning efficient systems, from warehouses to shipping, helped Amazon scale into the giant it is today. Despite its sheer size, Amazon maintains this culture even today. Even when you order socks, you’re benefiting from years of Bezos’s detailed planning when internet was just starting out!

Skillstr Story: Planning to Get Ahead

One of our team members was having a hard time back in high-school. Blame extremely difficult school exams, supposedly designed to prepare you for board exams! He was worried if he would actually fail his boards. That December before his board exam, following a pep talk with his brother, he formed a daily 13.5 hours plan in his dairy for the next 3 months. Everything was codified: when he would study, what he would study, and how he would do it. He graduated with a distinction and a 90% marks in a few subjects! Smart work succeeds!

How to Start Planning Like a Boss

Feeling fired up? Ready to dive into the world of planning? Here’s how to get started:

  1. Set clear goals: What does success look like for you? Make your goals SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound).
  2. Time-block your day: Break your day into chunks of time for specific tasks. Stick to those blocks like they’re sacred. Your calendar is your new BFF. Make scheduling a habit!
  3. Prioritise wisely: Start each day with a short list of “must-do” tasks. Conquer the hardest or most important ones first, and you’ll build momentum like a productivity beast.
  4. Reflect and review: Planning isn’t rigid, adjust your plan based on what’s working and what’s not. Review your progress weekly and fine-tune your approach, always.
  5. Celebrate wins: Seriously, don’t just cross things off, celebrate them! Recognizing small wins keeps you motivated to keep smashing your goals.
Planning isn’t just for perfectionists. It’s for anyone who wants to take control of their time and goals.
